Croydon Street Art

On Friday, 25th April, Event Organiser Jackie Husain took us for a Spring Walk around Croydon, opening our eyes to some of the artworks we may have been walking past for years, without ever noticing them.

Over the decades, what had started out as merely graffiti has developed into a sophisticated art form, some of which is now sponsored by Croydon Council, and helps to cover eyesores created during "redevelopment". (Unfortunately, as we saw, not everyone understands the difference and vandalism still flourishes.)

After meeting at East Croydon station, we took a short walk to admire the Croydon Symphony murals in Queen's Gardens (commissioned as part of London Borough of Culture in 2023) and read about the history of Croydon's lost railway station. Then back up to look at some of the long lasting murals around the High Street and the more recent steel sculptures of Samuel Coleridge Taylor, Peggy Ashcroft and Ronnie Corbett in Charles Street, followed by a stroll through the busy market in historic Surrey Street. We finished up with a look at some of the more modern work along North End and in the Whitgift Centre, before adjourning to the Clocktower Café for a spot of lunch.
